Go for Norton or Mcafee! They maybe not be free but they sure are helpful.

Bitdefender is good. I am using the Professional Edition now.
Unlike Norton and Mcafee, this is not resource hungry and even can run on older computers with say 256MB of ram.

You can simply try the 30day version of Norton or mcafee on a entry level computer 1GHz, 256MB ram or even lower specs running Windows XP and you will get rid of it within the same day.

The free ones will go to Avast and AVG. Avast is better in detection as compared to AVG. Daily updates? The original Bitdefender offers hourly updates!
