This is just a response to one of the previous answers. I would NOT recommend and arctic breed. (Husky of Malamute) Yes they are very pack oriented, but they tend to run away, and therefore must be kept in tall fenced in areas with plenty of room for them to run, but still are safe in the fenced area. So if you are just going to let the dogs run loose in a village, you might be missing a few (all) of the husky's. because they will go on hunting trips... and just might not come back. Otherwise they are GREAT dogs, love kids... love to play with humans and other dogs... not aggressive... (except towards small animals like cats, squirrel, rabbits...)

Dogs have to be selected for their requirement and work.
If u want it only as a pet then some of the recommended breeds are Alsatians, Boxer, Doberman and Great Danes, but remember pedigreed dogs have allied health problems. For an Indian village it will be ideal to pick up a pup from a local litter and keep it as a pet, he is more suited for the climate and environment.

I think labradors or Golden retrievers are best suited for farms and villages..they're smart and intelligent and like open spaces. They are intelligent enough not to bark at every living object that comes in sight, of course they do that till they are 9 months to a year old. They are also non-fussy eaters..they're always hungry and would virtually eat anything you feed them.
They're also good gaurd dogs and with kids around the house they're safe since they don't attack kids ever.
Retrievers are the way to go..I suggest!

A Border Collie.
They are very intelligent and after two years training will walk and return without a leash.
If the village you refer to has sheep though it's possibly not the dog for you as the have a genetic desire to herd them.

A breed of dog that would be owned by an entire community (village) would have to be very pack oriented. Hounds (scent and sight---such as Foxhounds or Saluki) are pack oriented, as are most arctic breeds (Your huskies and malamutes).
