You just have to make sure that you have backed up all the files especially present in Document and Settings Folder. What I suggest, before reinstalling XP, Log on with administrator and copy the entire Documents and Setings folder into some other location or USB flash drive. Otherwise you might loose all your IE favorites, Outlook mails, all files present in My document and any other file kept on Windows Desktop, if any mishap occured during reinstallation process.
.............. One more thing, before taking backup, in the Computer Explorer, turn on "Show all hidden files' options in Tools-folder options-View....

To be on the save side, I still suggest you backup your important data first before doing anything else, just in case the installation have some problems suddenly. Its good to be on the safe side.

insert xp's cd install a new copy & chose leave the partion with no changes

u just need to put an instalation disk into your drive and let it copy a new fresh copy on top of the old copy.. do not format or deletejust let it update.

back up all your data in an external hard disk, format your computer, and then just put the files back where they were.
