Each fruit contains different "ingredients" but overall, fruit has a lot of sugar. The vitamins and minerals can be gotten from a normal balanced diet that doesn't include fruit. Sailors used to get rickets from going to long without fruit but mainly from just not getting any fresh food. You hear a lot about the amount of vitamin C in fruit. Actually, once a fruit is picked from the tree, it begins to lose it's vitamin C. Since little of the fruit at the store is "fresh" there is really little to gain from it.
On the other hand, some fruit, like bananas are so full of nutrients, that you can almost live on just them.

If you go to this link (http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/browse/0900.html) you can click on any fruit and view its caloric contents as well as what vitamins it provides.

As far as the fruits that are most beneficial, see below.

Top Five Fruits:

Watermelon: Loads of vitamin C and carotenoids, good amount of fiber, and low in calories.
Papaya: Loads of vitamin C and carotenoids, great source of potassium and fiber.
Orange: Great vitamin C and folate, and plenty of fiber if you eat the whole fruit and not just the juice.
Grapefruit (pink or red): Loads of vitamin C and carotenoids, good amount of fiber of the cholesterol lowering type, pectin, plus it contains phytochemicals such as flavonoids, terpenes, and limonoids.
Apricots: They are brimming with beta-carotene, have loads of potassium and fiber, and contribute some vitamin C to the diet. Dried apricots don't have the vitamin C, but are a good source of iron. Canned apricots have only half the vitamin C and beta- carotene as fresh.

All fruits r good. Natural sugars, vitamins and fibre are in most of the fruits. I think we can live without fruits but it will be a dull and dry life.
