It's not so much whether the structure is horizontal or vertical, it's how the force is aligned. If the structure is resisting forces with a component at right-angles to the long axis, it is acting as a beam. If the forces act along the axis, it is a column. Of course, some structures have to resist both: for example a wind turbine tower is resisting the force of the wind on the blades which are trying to topple or bend it - it is acting as a beam. It also has to carry its own weight and that of the blades and turbine nacelle - it is acting as a column.

a beam is a horizontal structure usually used to support a ceiling or floor. Although occasionally they can be used as a vertical support structure generally placed at the sides of an existing wall when a wall has been knocked through to create one larger room.
A column is always a vertical structure and most commonly on the outside of a building although they can be used internally for extra support bewteen floor and ceiling, they are more commonly rounded and not squared like beams.

A beam is that which comes from a torch when switched on and a column is where you find an article in a newspaper.

I would imagine that a beam is horizontal (usually running through the ceiling or the roof) and a column is vertical.
Hope that helps you out!!

Beam is a structural member,
characterized by transver load,
bending is predominant,
the cross sectional dimensions are comparable and longitudinal dimensions is greater than 10 times of the dimensions of cross section
Column is a structural member subjected to axial load . Columns are subjected to buckling

Beam is loaded at right angles to its axis , Column is loaded in the same direction as its axis. Doesnt matter if the member is horizontal or vertical.

If you are talking in construction terms, a beam is a piece of metal or wood that supports a ceiling or roof from wall to wall across a room and a column supports a ceiling or roof from floor to ceiling.

and a beam would be horizontal or diagonal usually to support the roof, etc. Sorry not very technical....
