I have had a constantly pounding headache for the past week.

I have been to my doctors and I have been taken the tablets he has perscribed now for 5 days and still I have the constant headache and the doctor said to come back in 2 weeks.

But, I can't put up with this headache as I as I work in Local Authority and attend lots of meetings and it is making it hard for me to consentrate on my work.

Please note I have not changed my diet and I have not changed my sleep pattern.

It's driving me insane, can anyone suggest something..

Odd. I would call the doc and explain the situation stating that you simply can't wait.

You really ought to go back to the doctors and tell him the situation. It could even be the tablets that are now causing the problem. Its sounds like you are very stressed and have a very demanding job, this also will not be helping. Can you get a couple of days off to unwind and relax a bit. This may help you beat it quicker. Apart from that you don't know what is causing the headache and it may need further action, go back and don't stop going until you get some answers. Although some painkillers are good like migraleve I wouldn't take anything else incase it interupts or reacts with what you have been taking. It could also prevent you doctor prescribing further treatment. Good luck and I hope you find an answer soon.

Headaches are usually caused by pressure on the brain. Try drinking plenty of water and cut down on caffeine related products. You could also be suffering from a stiff neck etc from pulled muscles. I would however go back to your doctors and advise it is not getting better. Taking tablets for a sustained period of time is not good for anyone especially pain killers. If in doubt and you feel the dr is not helping seek a second consultant for advise. Or call NHS direct and see if the nurse can help. Dont leave it too long just because a doctor says so

Get a big bottle of gatorade and drink it all within an hour. If you search the internet, you will find this is a home remedy that works for a lot of people, I'm not messing with you or anything. I don't get headaches, so I do not know.

I do know that stress has something to do with some headaches. I have a friend who had migraines (diagnosed and treated by a doctor). she had them for 37 years. Three weeks after she got divorced, they went away and she hasn't had another one for 15 years. Go figure.

It might be congestion. Do you feel like you have a cold coming on? It's sometimes the pressure from your sinuses causing a headache.
Possible solutions that work for me are:
Taking decongestants. (Sinutab in the UK works a treat)
Echinacea for boosting your immune system to help stop the cold before it starts.
If it's just a common all garden headache, I'd also try applying pressure to the soft tissue on my left hand (fingers together, thumb out. The soft tissue between your thumb and first finger). Apparently this is a pressure point for relieving pain.
The other treatment is a spot of "self love". Apparently orgasms release happy hormones. These counter act the feelings of pain in the brain causing the ache and it's also a brilliant way of distracting you.

If its any consolation I hav been suffering from violent headaches too for the past 2-3 weeks, the doc has given me strong tablets, Codeine, they work to a point but after talking to other people I have found that many are suffering due to the current odd weather and air pressure.

Migraleve also works well too, or wear dark glasses when you can

Hope you feel better soon

The first things you should do is get your blood pressure checked and then have your eyes tested. Your work could be a contribution to either of these ie stress, reading. Even if your diet and weight arent an issue, high blood pressure is still possible. If you wear glasses, the frames could be resting on a pressure point or just a lens slightly out of focus would cause you to strain your eyes. Do it ASAP.

I have suffered with severe headaches all my life and it was recently found I had a very low potassium level so was given tablets, so you could ask for a test or maybe eat plenty of bananas (I cant stand them!) You could also try drinking more and maybe eat a packet of crisps which will help keep your salt intake level and stop you dehydrating, as that's what causes me headaches!

Go back to the Doctor and inform him/her that the tablets are not working and the headaches are worse and ask to be refered to hospital for tests.
Might be worth giving "N.H.S. Direct" a ring on - 08454647.

Don`t let the doctor fob you off, if you get no joy with him/her go to the A & E at your local hospital.

The best analgesic according to the nurse that I spoke to at NHS direct is to take a dose of paracetamol and then when the next dose is due take ibuprofen and alternate them, obviously making sure that you don't exceed the stated doses. Apparently the pain relief of paracetamol combines with the anti-inflammatory drug in Ibuprofen and they work better at stubborn pain. Hope it helps.
