Every time I've landed at Manchester Airport no-one seems to bother. The suitcases come round on the carousel, I pick them up and walk through the 'Nothing to Declare' Channel. There is a sort of office if you do have something to declare but I've never seen it manned. I have been searched several times when leaving Manchester and also at Gatwick and Eastleigh but never on arriving. However it is possible that the cases are scanned in advance before they get to you as they pass through an X-Ray machine.

If you are bringing back something you've already taken from the UK then you shouldn't need to declare it. Just make sue that you have proof it was bought here in the first place such as a receipt.

Someone I know recently flew from Spain back to Britain. They were amazed that going out there it was a case of removing shoes, emptying bags etc yet coming back there were next to no checks at Alicante airport, you just held your passport up and walked through. I think all countries need to act together to eliminate potential future security issues.

* The size of hand lugguage has also been changed. Check before you travel.
* Medicine may not be carried in liquid form, check with airport prior to departure.

Of course it is - as it always has been.
Depending on from where you are flying, the rigor with which they search/inspect is camparatively high when compared with a month or so ago...
