My computer just keeps hanging whenever I play games on it. What to do?

what video card you have? 40 GB and 256MB sounds like a p3 to me but any ways check the requirements of the game now a days gamers use video cards all video cards have their own memory 128-256-512MB etc you can still play some early games in a regular PC but even those games may not meet your PC specifications so always check , in this case
your RAM is not able to keep up and is only 256MB a 1 GB memory investment will give you plenty of memory space to play your game as long as it is compatible and also check your fans just in case.
