i once had insomnia and took those herbal sleep aids and was more wired than ever. turns out i was allergic to them.
what i've found works is the following:
don't eat for around four hours before you go to bed
no caffeine for six hours before bed time.
tchaikovsky's four seasons (no idea why. it's really relaxing)
lavendar oil
sleepy time tea by celestial seasonings
if you live in an urban setting and don't have blackout curtains get a sleep mask. earth body soul makes one that is a silk cotton blend and is extra thick. they sell them at steinmart and tj maxx for under ten dollars you'd be surprised how much true darkness can help in the quest for sleep.
no tv thirty minutes before going to bed.
and if you can afford one a white noise machine to mask urban noise.

I feel bad for you, the more you can't sleep, the more irritated one can become. I go through this all the time. Here are a few things to try since sleep aids or benedryl aren't working. Make sure you cut back on chocolates and caffeine. Try to not do any simulating things before bed, such as exercises, cleaning or even working on bills or a checkbook, absolutely nothing that will increase your heart rate or get you thoughts rolling, last but not least, relax. If you finally get to sleep, but can't stay asleep, don't get out of bed... stay there, try to clear your mind and relax. If this still doesn't work, move out to the couch, it works for me! Good luck and I hope you have sweet dreams!

Just shut down the computer, get in bed and lie there even if you don't sleep. No TV, no lights on. You will sleep eventually.
alternatively, get a DVD of Tarkowski's film "Stalker" (The guide-nothing to do with the american sesnse of the word stalker). Great film artistically, honestly, but it will help you sleep in no time.

i know what a pain it is to have insomnia - this may sound nutty - but my aunt SWEARS by it - try GOJI juice. its a bit expensive but you just take a shot of it a few hours before bed and it really relaxes you and helps you sleep. check it out on the web or you can go to your nearest health food store. it has many many benefits - good luck!
