It's certainly an issue that needs to be explored further. However there does need to controls in place to stop murder.

i had this debate about euthanasia before... i didn't remember if i was for or against... but n e how... here are something that you could point out:

British Columbia, if you don't provide a specific living will, a hospital can put a DNR (Do Not Rescusitate) order on you without your consent!

Unbearable pain as the reason for euthanasia

Should people be forced to stay alive? No. And neither the law nor medical ethics requires that "everything be done" to keep a person alive. Insistence, against the patient's wishes, that death be postponed by every means available is contrary to law and practice. It would also be cruel and inhumane.

Its a tricky issue, but personally I think if a person is of sound mind and do concent to it before they deteriorate then it should be allowed with the permission of the next of kin. Maybe some sort of pre empted wishes like a modified will which would be legal could be put in place to make sure there is no foul play, and a strict set of guidlines to follow as to what is state of mind is right and wrong. Watching a loved one suffer is terrible on any level and the choice should be available, after all if a person is only being kept alive on a mchine the choice is given to the family to terminate treatment why should it be different for the terminally ill or old age.

i believe in euthenasia. Take it from this point of view, if you were the person considering euthanasia for yourself what would go through your mind. I find that a lot of people who are against euthenasia would rather keep a person alive who is suffering for their own selfish reasons. In the end it is that persons decision. I have already made it very clear to my family and loved ones that if i am in a situation where i am suffering or i will live a life that i deem unhappy (my own personal beliefs) then i must be taken off ventilation or they must not resusitate.

Is the argument freedom of choice or is it humanity?
What Euthanasia opens up is the opportunities for abuse (The long suffering helper doing away with the patient or the heir to a few quid, not always a fortune or the family business)

Or should we let people really suffer unmanageable pain and some times the degradation that goes with it if they would prefer to put an end to it peacefully and humanly?

It so final if you do not like the result there is no going back

Its a good debate

Personally I think there is nothing wrong with Euthanasia, if the person who wants to die is terminally ill.

People would freely take their dog to the vets and have it put down if it was for the best, so why can't humans have that same choice. It's ludicrous if you ask me.

I lost my wife at a very young age to cancer, but I only found out about it three days before she died. But if it would have been a long suffering cancer, as so many are, and she would have asked me to help her to die, I would have definitely helped her no questions asked. I don't give a toss what the law says.

every case should be looked at differently. if the person has explicitly said they want to die and are saying they are in a lot of pain, having trouble doing simple things for themselves and needing round the clock care, then it should be decided as this is all their life is, and they agree, it should be done. but only when other methods have been tried.

Death with dignity.

Fun fact: When a poll was taken of senior citizens as to who their hero was, the overwhelming response was Dr. Kevorkian.

I think its impossible to say whether its wrong or right till you actually have to do it. Picture your mum or dad dying, constantly in pain begging you to help them die. A very hard choice indeed.

I say that using it on someone terminally is doing them a favor so not to prolong their suffering. We do it for animals that are suffering and we should it for people that are suffering too.
