What does " Running flat out" mean?? I don’t mean the tyre running flat, but the business Running flat out.

The problem its commonly used in Aussie but it get confusing when you hear "the business is running flat out"

When pertaining to anything but a car, it means doing the best you can, operating at greatest potential, doing the "maximum".
If a business is running flat out, it's operating at it's maximum output. That can mean a good thing!

I think this is probably derived from the fact that animals tend to flatten & stretch, & so are closer to the earth, when they run at great speed.
So, to be going "flat out" is to be really busy or moving very quickly. "Flat-chat" is another expression.
We Aussies have mixed two descriptions when we say "flat out like a lizard drinking".
