its not a dumb question at all, I do think you should get checked as its obvious it runs in your family.....are you having signs of diabetes?? afraid or not its still best to get checked regularly as if you do et it & it goes untreated you could damage yourbody & when it finally gets bad enough that you have to go to the Dr you may have caused permanent damage to your eyes, kidneys, etc etc.....I would go & then get checked maybe every year or so to keep on top of it....sorry it does seem your chances of becoming a diabetic are greater than others but better to know & treat it than be ignorant & suffer

Not necessarily. Diabetes does have a prediliction for certain families but the genetic theory is doubtful. It is a multifactorial disease where environment also plays a part.It is not complete genetic transmission like other hereditary diseases. There is no clear cut ratio of transmission of disease but a likelihood or suspicion of having is slightly higher than normal. The best thing to do would be to have an early fasting blood sugar level done ina lab. Medicaid can cover the expenses, it is a very inexpensive test. If it is normal there is no chance of having the disease.

Definately not a stupid question. If your mother has type one diabetes than yes there is cause for you to get checked out. But if your mother has adult onset diabetes, type2, then no you do not have to get checked. But in any case if would be fun to check your blood sugar levels using your mom's blood glucose reader. it is not a diagnosis but a reading of over a 100 fasting or 120 post meal would indicate a need to see your doctor.

of course its not a dumb question if its something youre worried about. i would go to the doctor and get checked out, there is nothing to be scared about, the doctors are there to help you. if you have diabetes it is better to know as soon as poss so you can get treatment to keep you healthy. and if you havent got it then you can relax and not worry. please dont be scared doctors will explain everything and will give you lots of support. good luck.
