i have to use crutches for awhile due to knee surgery and i was wondering if it will help with upper body strength. i had been going to the gym b4 my surgery to work on toning my arms and was wondering if that will help.

not unless you strap weights to both ends and do bench presses=)

Yes,the fact that you are using your upper body to move your mass around means you are getting upper body work.The triceps and anterior(front )deltoids will do most of it.
