Anything you carry on will go through a scan. You will walk through a metal scan. Many airports will ask you to remove your shoes which goes through a scan.
You will be asked for ID (usually a couple of times).
Call your airline or check on the web for more information-it is usually on web site.
Certain things are not allowed as carry on
(lighters-files-ect)
If you are asked to step aside for some reason-they could check you further.
Again go to the airlines web site or call there is usually a 800 number.

By the airport, you mean? Well, it is varying a little from airport to airport. Portland's airport is not allowing small amounts of costmetic liquids or pastes, while San Deigo is allowing them.

Watch out for storeowners who lie. While I was in the Portland airport the store owners said we could buy water and shampoo and bring it with us, since we were past security. This is not true. Not only is it illegal under the current rules, but some passengers were randomly searched again in the secured area right before boarding.

In San Diego show removal was mandatory while going through security. In Portland it is optional. Beyond X-raying baggage and putting people through metal detectors, there is not a single, constistant set of precautions being used.

You can't take liquids on anymore. You have to take off your shoes at security. You have to show ID a couple of times.

no liquids or gels are allowed on carry-on. no deodorant either. no perfumes or water (they're liquids..). when you go through security they will confiscate these things and tell you to either throw it away or let them place it into your checked luggage. you will also have to take off your shoes to be x-rayed; doesn't matter what type you're wearing. they need to come off.
