there's a definite little organ around your eye called the plica semilunaris. it relatively is the crust manufacturing unit. It secretes a sticky fluid that collects any dirt or pollen that has migrated into your eye. All those distant places bits are surrounded via this sticky stuff, so your cornea does not get scratched. This little organ "escorts" that rubbish out of your eye merely like a secure practices look after.

i've always heard it referred to as "sand" in polite company. nowadays though i say eye boogers.
