You need to have a diploma or GED to be accepted to most colleges. You often can take specific courses at community colleges but you will need a GED or diploma before you can get a degree.

Not necessarily. I've met a couple people at my school who didn't graduate high school. However, the reason that they didn't finish high school wasn't that it was too hard or they just didn't pass their classes. Rather, they found high school too easy, and were were accepted to college early, without finishing high school. I've also known people to drop out of high school after two or three years and take classes at a community college for a couple years and then go on to a four-year college, but again it's because they were under-challenged in high school. Also, they started taking college classes as soon as they left high school.

But to do that you pretty much have to start taking college classes right away. Otherwise, whatever you reasons for dropping out, it ends up looking like at the time you just weren't motivated enough to finish. In general, you can't go to college without a high school diploma or GED. Talented high school kids are often allowed to take courses at community college, and having successfully completed college-level coursework, they might then be admitted to a private university or four-year college, but that's really the only way to do it without a high school diploma. It's basically impossible to go to a state school without a high school diploma, and it's usually only small, competitive schools that will consider it.

Yes, you do need a high school diploma if you wanna go straight to either a private university, state university, or even community college. Now, GED is taken by those who don't have a high school diploma.

"People who left high school without graduating often find that employers and post-secondary institutions will not accept them without showing some form of academic competency. Since adults often cannot or will not return to high school, receiving the GED allows them to demonstrate that they possess a skill level comparable to that of an average high school graduate."
