Unless you are an accredited journalist or a DoD/State Department contractor, you will not be allowed formal contact with the troops or set foot on any Coalition military installation. That is the bottom line.
Iraq is not Disneyland. Your prior military experience (which to be blunt, is neither relevant or impressive) does not qualify you for anything. You may visit Iraq as a private citizen; contrary to popular (and uninformed) belief, there is actually a tourist industry here, especially in the Kurdish areas to the north. The degree of contact you will be allowed the troops will depend entirely on the relevance of your work to their peacekeeping efforts.
Also keep in mind that while you may want to visit the troops, the troops may want to have nothing to do with you. I know that I never felt comfortable having an outside with me on my patrols, unless they were private security contractors.
If you are serious about "writing the good things you see", get accreditation as a journalist through CENTCOM. Ignore the idiots who say "join the military" as chances are they're not even military themselves and haven't even thought your question through before posting garbage.
You'll pay your own way regardless. Good luck.

If you are a civilian, American or Thai, you can't just buy a plane ticket and go visit regardless of the reason why. It is obviously,a war zone and they don't have any Holiday Inn's for you to stay at plus they isn't any protection for civilian unless.....
I was over there for 18 months as a civilian contractor for the DoD and you are provided with meals, housing, military protection and in my case I had the opportunity to travel in convoy's (attacked 7 times by IEDs, 2 rocket attacks, stopped counting after the 35th mortar attack, etc.) and then traveled from location to location by Blackhawk,C-130 and C-23.
Only way I know how to get in country is to join the service or secure a job the government needs filled. I am looking to return next month.

I think the last thing American troops need right now is another visitor from outside.
I can imagine that they want to chill out with what spare time they get and write to their loved ones.
Why don't you see if you can get a pen pal from there instead.
And also i don't think you'll see any good things out there.
I understand where your coming from though.

You can't just go because you want to visit! They send celebs to entertain them, which I find stupid but hey. But you can't go just because you feel like it. You must be kidding.
