"James" OR "Jacob". All these names apparently go back to the Hebrew Biblical name Ya`akob, though the Greek translation, in which it comes out"Yakobus".

There is some debate about how we got to "Diego"... it may be by means of a shortening form of "Yacobus" as "Iago" as in "Santiago" (Sant ='saint' + Iago), which was then redivided as "San Diego". The Latin word Didacus (teacher) may have influenced the form "Diego".
