That is a good question. Maybe because they look better in flowing robes than male Angels do. As the bible was written in a patriarchal society most Angels are portrayed as being male and armed with swords and lances. It could also be a left over from when the society was matriarchal and most angels were portrayed as female with other weapons and images of peace and serenity. Or just because we all start out as female in the physical womb.

Good question. The Bible not once mentions a female angel nor an angel having feminine qualities and in Genesis are referred to as "sons of God".
The female angel concept comes chiefly from the Roman Catholic Church, although I could not tell you the reasons why, but it has effected people's thinkings across the board, even the breakaway churches maintained a few ideas from the Roman Catholic religious concepts.

Because most of the visual arts portray angels as having long hair and in long flowing robes. In church plays, I imagine it's hard to find a boy with flowing hair and a willingness to wear a "dress"...
Chalk it up to life imitating art.
Edit: The scholarly view is that angels are neither male nor female, btw...
Ummm...Sarge?...Cupid was a character from roman mythology...completely different from the Judeo Christian concept of an "angel" even though most of his images depict him like a cherubim.

Sadly, the theatre can be quite sexist, hence little girls. The finer points of masculine immaturity are so often overlooked.
I am of the opinion that the general conception is angels are males cf. Michael & Gabriel as the named Biblical angels.

Probably because the general perception of an Angel is a beautiful being, and woman are more beautiful than us men.
On the other hand if we wanted to be Biblicaly correct they are non gender, but the only Angels named in the Bible have men's names, Gabrial, Michael, Lucifer, The Angel of the Lord (Jesus) in the Old Testament.

Little girls have always loved playing angels. In grammer school, none of the boys in my class wanted to put on the robes, halos, or wings. They thought it made them look girly. So all angles in school plays have been girls. We walk around with our halos on proudly.
In the Bible, most of the angles that were referred to had no mention of sex. The archangels though had male names and were spoken about as males.
Angels in the Bible come in many shapes and sizes.

Back when most artists were male, most angels were depicted as females (I wonder why??). Actually, in the Bible, the only angels specifically referred to have male names.

because people would rather believe a church play than the TRUTH... Angels are neither male or female and don't have literal feathery wings....
(Mat 22:29) Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.
(Mat 22:30) For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
(Mat 22:31) But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,
(Mat 22:32) I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
IMPORTANT!!! not all angels are GOOD!!!
Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
(2Co 11:13) For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
(2Co 11:14) And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
(2Co 11:15) Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

It does seem odd since angels in the Bible are all referred to as "he." This may not be an indication of sex, of course, since they are spiritual beings. My guess as to why angels are now portrayed as feminine, is the identification with the soul or "anima" in Latin, which is in the feminine gender. I am also puzzled by the fact that blonds are often preferred for angels. A Sunday School teacher told my daughter she should be an angel in the Christmas pageant, because she is blond; but my daughter wanted to be a shepherd.
