That's a question only you can answer for yourself. Everyone reacts to combat differently. A quiet shy person may be the most ruthless killer among a group of people that brag about what they are going to do when the stuff hits the fan.

As a Police Officer and as an Ex-Infantryman, I have been fortunate enough to never have seen real combat. I have had some close calls on the streets and my blood has been pumping, but what I remember most was Somalia. No I never did get to go, but My Unit was activated and were fixing to go when we got called to stand down and they sent 10th Mountain instead.

All of us were eager to go and fight, but when they said we were going, that all changed. A lot of us were crying and kissing family good bye, not knowing if were coming back. Others were praying, and I had never known them to be religious before. When we were told to stand down, you could feel the tension in the air plane leave.

After it (Somalia) was all done and the stories were coming in, I realized just how close to combat I was. I remember thinking I was lucky.

A few good books to read on the subject are

1. "On Killing" by Lt Col. Dave Grossman

2. "In The Company of Heroes" by Michael Durant

3. "Black Hawk Down" by Mark Bowden

Stress on top of worry with constant fear and little sleep and lack of peace with no peace of mind.
It's one constant ongoing thought with no reasoning and with no outlet mixed with adrenaline.
God bless our troops...

you must be a warrior poet, or else you will not make it, you'll be alive but your soul will be numb and you will see shadows that won't let you be.
