He was honorably discharged. If I address him like "Hey, Marine!", will that be okay? or will it offend him? Is it like "once a Marine always be a Marine" thing?

A Marine is always proud to be called "Marine". A Marine does not have to be retired to still be called Marine - anyone who has earned the title can be called a Marine no matter how many years since discharge.
Once a Marine Always a Marine.
Semper Fi !

Devoted Marines are Marines for life. On my Dad's side, I come from a Military family, it really is the "once a Marine, always a Marine" thing.

Hi there;

You would be absolutely correct in addressing your friend as "Marine" All the other answers about once a marine always a marine is completely true. Your friend has the distinct honor of now being able to sign his name as "John Doe, U.S. Marine Corp. Ret". No one really leaves the Corp. Be proud to know him. :)

Most MARINES are pretty laid back. They don't usally bring up the past. " ONCE A MARINE ALWAYS A MARINE!!! No matter how old/younge... NO if,and, or buts!! plain and simple. GOOD or Bad....Father in law was a grunt in the Veitam War. Brother in law in the GULF WAR as a MARINE & in OP. FREEDOM as ARMY RES> , Husband in the "OP. FREEDOM" Not to forget another brother in law in the ARMY who served in the Gulf War AND OP Freedom. All sevices, once in you're in; BUT NO MORE THAN THE MARINE!~! "MARINES FIRST IN BATTLE" !!!! .they're NOT called "DEVIL DOGS" for nothing and you should respect this. Everyone will have their oppions but ... could they express them if it wasn't for our servicemen AND women? Think long and hard. Don't forget. The enemy will NEVER!!..... P.S navy vs. marines, My dad STILL calls my husband a "jarhead" BUT he won't call my father in law a " jar head". Isn't that ironic?

Hell yes he was. He was wounded in Vietnam, and when he got back to the states, was made an honorary drill instructor. Yeah, isn't it great growing up with a father who was a Marine corp. drill instructor? VERY fun huh? Can't get away with ANYTHING at all, ever. Always SIR this and SIR that, I love my father, he is a great man. Wouldn't be the person I am today if it wasn't for him. lol

Yes, once you are part of something like the Marines, you are always one in your heart, but if you think he or she may not like it then maybe you should ask them first, like anything you do you should see how the other feels about it and do what make you both feel comfortable
