its not just cos he ate too much cookies or drank too much milk, in our minds the santa that was portrayed was a plump jolly good fellow. did we even think about how he look like when he was young? never cos from what we know about him, he had been old and plump, with his white beard. so how did he have a round stomach in the first place, i think even he doesnt know it!

Because the original tradition came from Scandinavia. On the coldest night of winter Odin, Norse God of all Gods would pick that day to be nice and go around doing good deeds and leave gifts. Odin was big with a white beard. This was just one of those traditions that the Christians of that land could not get rid of so it evolved into the Santa that you see today. The Saint Nick story went into disguising were this tradition originally came from as well. Don't get me wrong Saint Nick was a real person, but he is not were the tradition started from, trust me. If you would like I can tell you why we celebrate Easter with eggs and rabbits too, another originally pagan tradition.

When you stop at every kids house once a year and eat what goodies they left for you at every house then you are bound to get fat. Mrs Claus tries to keep the big dude on a diet all year round but she can't stop the rotund jolly guy from snacking.
