Holy water, along with holy oils, which are known as "chrism" are typically blessed during a special Mass, celebrated by a Bishop, some time over the Easter season, every year.

Holy water is regular, pure water with a bit of salt added, to keep it fresh.

In the old testament, ordinary water was often used and required to purify vessels, as well as the persons of the temple attendants and priests.

Today, holy water is used by Catholic priests for baptism, at funerals, to consecrate sacred articles for use, to bless homes, buildings, and various types of vehicles, and for personal blessings of all kinds.

Holy water is most commonly and widely used in special receptacles or founts, which are typically found at or near the entrances of Catholic churches.

It is customary to bless one's self when entering or leaving church, by simply dipping one's fingers into the fount, and then making the sign of the cross, while at the same time, saying a brief prayer to God.

As the water is usually a bit chilly, it is also rather refreshing!

Purpose Of Holy Water

It is regular water that is blessed by the Priest. The purpose of Holy Water is as a sort of reminder of baptism as you enter the sanctuary. Catholics will make the sign of the cross with Holy Water on their fingers to represent this as they come in. In many Catholic parishes, it is optional to use it when you enter, but many Catholics do it as a matter of personal practice. The Holy Water is mainly used for baptisms and is available to all members who enter the sanctuary. Holy Water is also used as we leave to purify ourselves as we enter the world.

It has been prayed over. Similar to different occurrences in the Bible, where water was blessed and people were healed by touching it we believe in the power of prayer.

It is symbolism, used in every religion. When pegans use the same symbolism, it is called devil worship by the catholics. Pretty egotistical, huh?
