How about a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier? Or perhaps a West Highland White Terrier? (They are more on the small side though.)
Many dogs who are good about not shedding much are terriers, who are known for being willful. That doesn't mean that they aren't trainable, however.

I have a cocker spaniel, he sheds bad if he's not groomed(shaved) He's a very sweet affectionate dog! He has passed his basic obedience and knows a few tricks. Unfortnatly he has bad ear infections and is now going deaf at 4 years! We have been using hand signals to train him and when his hearing is gone we'll still be able to communicate. Most animal shelters have nice medium sized dogs! A good quality food will help with the sheding. Another thing short haired dogs shed the worse! Long haired animals usually ahve thinner coats, since the length of the fur keeps them warm, while short haired animals have a denser more full coat (I had a pug and he'd shake and a cloud of hair would come off him!!!!)

A dog is such a very personal choice that you should really do your own research. Either get an all breed book of better yet, go to a dog show where you can see all the breeds, find the ones you like the looks of, then research them to find out about temperament, health problems, energy levels, grooming needs, and so on. Talk to people who have them and interact with the dogs. That way you can much more sure of getting the perfect dog for you not the perfect dog for someone else.

Poodles and poodle crosses don't shed AT ALL. They need a clipping a couple of times a year instead. They are also reasonably bright and easy to train, and come in several sizes.
I love Shih-Tzus the best, they shed very little but require lots of grooming unless you keep them in a short pet trim( as opposed to showdog trim).

A Toy Poodle would be your best bet.All dogs shed, but poodle hair stays put within their coat, that's why major brushing is suggested, not too mention grooming by a pro.Poodles are very smart, loveable, and loyal. And very easy to train!!!!

Rather than focusing on the breeds coat,I suggest you research the needs and characteristics of breeds.Energy and activity levels etc .Dogs are not happy unless well exercised ,how much time you ar e willing to spend walking and playing should influence wheather you get a high energy dog or a mellower breed. consider all the characteristics not just a couple, you and your dog will be glad you did.

What you do is look into mixed breeds that are basically "allergy free". Cockapoos, labradoodles puggles, dogs like that normally have less shedding. You could always look into dogs such as maltese, bichon frises and chineses cresteds. If you're looking for bigger, the portugese water dogs and basenjis are good as well. My friend has a basenji and she loves him to pieces.
Good Luck!

Get a poodle- the breed is known for not shedding hair, and is hypoallergenic.
