Is that enough time? Maybe it's just a California thing. I find it to be such a short amount of time. My son loves it so much that he wishes it were longer. Maybe it's because they really want small class sizes in our district. How long did your kindergartners go?

When I went to kindergarten, it was in a latin magnet school. We went to class from eight to three-thirty P.M everyday. I loved it. Now some places only make a child go for half a day. I believe that if you feel that your child is getting the proper education for advancement to the next grade, plus plenty of time for them to interact with others and use their imaginations...then just let them be. If it turns out differently, you can help them at home. Children need to develop a good sense of self and functioning learning patterns for progression throughout life. Give them what they need. You are the best person to decide what is best.

The district I work in has two shifts of kindergarten, the morning and afternoon. Each is around 3 hours. For most kids that age, it seems to be a good amount of time at school.

I went to kindergarten for half days as well. I enjoyed it, but I was also glad to be home when I was.

There are other kindergartens in the area that go all day. I think that it is more of a district-to-district discrepancy.

I live in the Northeast (NY area) and Kindergarten is all day just like the rest of elementary school grades. Some schools start at 9 and end at 3 and some start at 8 and end at 2.

By age 5/6 they are able to handle 6 hours. 3 hour days should be for preschoolers.

In Australia - our Kindergarten (or Prep) is part of a normal school. It's the year before year 1. Can start at a public school at 4 and a half but most children are 5.
Pre-schools (3 years to 6 years) vary though usually 9am til 3pm .

Here we have the option of 1/2 day or full day KG. My son was in 1/2 day afternoons when he was in KG (now in 2nd grade) and my daughter is now in 1/2 day morning KG. When my youngest is ready she will go 1/2 day as well. Half-day KG here lasts about 3 hours per day. (Approx 8:35 to 11:35 OR 12:40 to 3:40)

I think full day is way too long for KG kids! They are too tired at the end of the day and some can't concentrate that long! They also need time to play and have fun...not just spend their whole day at school.

Im here in California also . Our kinder classes are all day 8-2:30pm.
Your district must have alot of kinders so in order to help everyone they make the hours short so that the next group is able to come in. Our preschool program is only 4 hr. it has 2 sessions. 8-11 and 11:30-2pm so that way two session of 14 students are able to come in learn.

My son's kindergarten was as long as the elementary school went- from 8:15 till 2:40. They did half days a few years ago, I think because of a staffing issue.

I think it really varies by the area you live in. Back in the day (over 15 years ago) I went to full-day kindergarten. I think there is a lot to be said for smaller class sizes, and he is probably getting more out of it. My class was reasonably large, and I can't say from experience that it was beneficial. Personally, I don't want my kids to go to public school based on my experiences.

I live in Utah, and my daughter goes for 2 1/2 hours on regular days and 2 hrs on short day. SHORT DAY! Can you even believe that kindergarteners need a short day? I agree, their day should be longer, they can handle it, but I think that we live in a society that coddles children instead of exploring their abilities. For now, just accept it and go to the zoo with your son. It will teach him something and you'll get to spend time with him, too.

when my son was a kindergartner i was kinda upset that it was only for 3 hours but that year they had started a all day class and he got to be in that ...it was from 9-2:30. he loved it. check and see if they have that. his school didn't publish that info they just asked you what class you want all day or half day when you went to sign up.
