Served in Viet Nam. And it repulses me that they are so many loose lipped spoiled brats in our country today that just don't get it. I think we need a program similar to Israel's. Everyone will serve their country in some form or fashion for two to four years.

It would wake up and grow up a lot of people in this country.

I was drafted (yeah, I'm that old) but extended my tour to go through Boot Strap. Served in Viet Nam. Finished my regular service as a WO2.

Would I have gone into the service if I hadn't been drafted? Probably not, but who knows. I do know I'm proud of my service time, proud of my record, happy I came back without any serious injuries (except some hearing loss) and am forever grateful that the Army exposed me to all walks of life, all types of people from different religious beliefs and ethnic backgrounds. Had I stayed in West Texas where I grew up my experiences would have been greatly limited.

As to defending our homeland this can be done by some without them serving in the military. There are many other ways. For instance, I was an Air Marshall (GS-11) for several years after my service time. But you have to understand that even in a perfect world not everyone can be in the military. If so, who would be our doctors, teachers, firemen, cops, truck drivers, housewives, etc.?

Not all people are cut out for military life and, to be honest with you, many I've met I wouldn't want covering my back on patrol.

Yes, I served 22 years in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1970 to 1992. I was fortunate enough to make Vietnam, Grenada, and Desert Shield. Like DOCTOR WATSON, the only injury I sustained was hearing loss. I retired as a Gunnery Sergeant.

By the way, What the heck is "AUST" ?

I've been in the military for 5yrs now, I'm a medical officer/surgeon, served in Iraq, Afghanistan, East Timor, Solomon Islands and Lebanon. To be honest though I didn't start out in the military "to defend my country". My country Australia has no immediate threats, hasn't for quite some time now. I joined the military to help out those caught unwillingly in the cross fire of hell on earth.

I wanted to sign up in 1967. You may be too young to remember NAM. We lost about 50,000 American souls in that "conflict".

The recuter told me I could fly Cessna 337's... (I already had some flight training).... When I drug my dad down there to sign the papers (I was only 17) they told me I would have to fly choppers instead.

I was crazy but not stupid. Told them I'd go raise a family and serve my country by paying a lot of taxes..

NOTE: My good buddy when in as door gunner. He made it out but not after having 4 choppers shot out from under him and having 6 of his pilots exacuted where they sat..

Defend against what? No one is invading. Quite the contrary, the U.S. has a history of invading other nations. We invaded Cuba and fought Spain, but had no reason. the one given, blowing up the Alabama, didn't happen. We fought on the side of a corrupt government in South Vietnam, allegedly to stop communism. But, the government in S. Vietnam was as bad as most communist states and those we fought are now our friends it seems. But, N. Vietnam wasn't threatening the United States. Then, there's Reagan's little war, Grenada. There was no reason to go in there other than the macho desire of the Reagan Administration to show it was tough on socialism.

Iraq is the prime example of US adventurism. Sure, Sadaam was an obnoxious pig, started wars in the region (the biggest, with Iran, with our support), and was a bloody dictator. But, we allowed him to stay after Desert Storm (Kuwait) and could have cleared him out then when his actions justified removing him. As searches and investigations have shown, he had no weapons of mass distruction and was no worse than numerous other bloody dictators we allow to remain in power. Now, we 're bogged down in mess for which there is no clear exit.

As for serving in the military, no I did not. Vietnam was going on at the time I turned 18 and. like most my age, I had no desire to slog my way around the jungles of Southeast Asia and die for an unwinnable war fought on a flimsy basis. But, I've given service to my country, both in volunteering and through work. For 25 years, I worked as a social worker (children's protective services) and administered programs that redeveloped low income neighborhoods, essentially reconstructing over 400 homes, primarily for low income elderly. I've given of my time to programs for the aging, volunteered as an assistant scout master, served on the board of a head start program, and numerous other activities, not to mention working with my church to develop low-income housing for the elderly and disabled.

So, have I served my country, yes in very fullfilling and worthwhile ways. My service is/was as important to the defense of this nation as that of one serving in the armed services. And, it was done often at sacrifice.
