Beagles were bred to be aloof but loyal. They're pack-oriented and bred to be able to make their own decisions and so on. As such, they can be troublesome to train because they are Beagles---the traits that make them difficult to train are what makes them a Beagle. =D
They're more difficult to train than say, a Doberman, but they're easier to train than say, a terrier (VERY stubborn breed).

We have raised Beagles for many years, and it really isn't a matter of Beagles being easy or hard to train, they are just different than many breeds. Beagles almost potty train themselves, but trying to teach a Beagle to come when called can be a nightmare.
Two simple rules for Beagle owners are;
#1 Never chase a Beagle !! Beagles are a hunting dog, and their method of hunting is to chase a rabbit in a circle. When the handler moves twards the dog it will expand it's hunt. So if you try to chase one, it will only become farther away, it's bred into them.
#2 Never leave a beagle loose & unattended in the house. Beagles are a scent hound, and any spot where food was ever spilled (no matter how well it was cleaned) a Beagle will find ,,,,,,, and eat !!

Yes, in my opinion they're some of the dumbest dogs, sorry- but I owned one personally and I got him as a puppy but ended up giving him away cuz he just had terrible habits. He ate anything and would later put it out the other end! I found all kinds of stuff like socks, and hair bands and other junk. Couldn't train him worth a lick! Never got potty trained cuz he was too stupid. Oh well, they're cute as buttons but I just don't have the patience for that breed.

Beagles are pretty smart, but not very trainable. They ARE Hounds after all, and bred to hunt but not so much to please you. I like all Hounds, but you have to be able to appreciate their intelligence and the fact that they will have their own ideas about things which may not be the same as yours. Beagles tend to be a 'soft' breed and will not do well with harsh training, you will do better with treats. They are also barky, being pack hounds. They are very nice and sweet, but if you want blind obedience from a dog, better stay away from the Hound group.
Liberal - It wasn't that your Beagle was dumb. YOU just weren't smart enough to be able to train it.
Sweetbreezebeagles - NICE dogs!

It depends on what you want to put up with.My 1st Beagle was called Echo & her name was very apt when she went off & you called your voice might as well have bounced back.
My old boy I've go now came last in puppy training was doing so well until the last night when he had an exam at the recall he looked at me looked about him then walked off & peed up the piano in the hall. not bothered with recall since unless it involves food.
They are good company very funny if you can put up with everytihng else. I would not be without mine I have owned 5.

I have a beagel/bassit mix and I swear she's untrainable. We tried everything with her and she's still rotten as ever. She's an attention freak and when left alone for over an hour she tears up anything in sight. Hope your's isn't as bad, and you don't have as much trouble training. Maybe its because mine is a mix of two rotten dogs.
Good luck

I remember reading from a book, it says that beagles are stubborn... so i think it'll be pretty hard for you to train it... unless you are willing to pay money for it's training classes, then that's up to you... so, good luck..! :)

YES.
I have one, I would know.
They bark like crazy, howl at night, and mine bites, they follow their noses and not your commands, so don't let one off the leash because it'll run off and chase squirells or try to steal someones food. I made the mistake of not being strict with my dog as soon as I got her, so know I have to suffer the consequences.
OMG, mine is barking right now. No joke. gotta go.

well they are a hound so that in itself pretty much sums it up....yes they can be difficult as they are bred to be headstrong & active, they like most hounds are also know for barking & howling as they were bred to hunt fox & such & it is in their nature to sound off when on the scent of their quarry...best of luck to you!
