The basic reason is to replenish your brain's and body's chemical balance. While you are awake, you build up toxins throughout your entire system, and deplete the neuro-chemicals in your brain. When you sleep, even just for short periods, like naps, you give your body a chance to purge the toxins and replenish your natural bio-chemicals.
