I often ride my bike equiped with Look pedals with work boots or other shoes lugged and semi-rigid soles and its fine. But Eggbeaters are a different animal. You can't realistically use them for any length of time. Crank Brothers also makes the Candy, Mallet, Smarty, Quattro and 50/50 (platform pedals) which you can use your regular shoes with (with varying degrees of success).

I think it would be pretty uncomfortable to wear regular shoes with eggbeater pedals. But Crank Brothers makes the mallet with a large platform around the eggbeater, and the candy and smarty with smaller platforms around the eggbeater so you could wear regular shoes more comfortably, but also wear shoes with eggbeater cleats.

I have tried to ride with my SPDs are few times with regular shoes and found it pretty difficult, even for very short distances, and they are much bigger than eggbeaters.

Triscuit has it right. Go either for the Mallets, or Shimano 647.
