My female Cocker Spaniel pup is 9 months old and just got scratched in the eye by our cat!! Within 5 minutes her all was all bloodshot and shut. If I open it, it looks like a scratch/cut on the eyeball itself, what can i do tonight to help her? It no longer seems to bother her, other than looking awful. We have some left over meds from an eye infection...should i use these??? Helpp.

Thank you all for your quick responses! This just happened about 15 minutes ago and I am worried about her...she is my baby! I just called my husband at work and he is going to take her to the emergency vet.

Good to hear that you're getting her seen to by a vet. It may be an idea (depending on how much experience your vet has with eye problems) to take her to a veterinary eye specialist (needs a referral from your local vet). The vet will probably give you antibiotic ointment for her (DON'T use the one you've got left over!) and maybe atropine drops, and will probably give her a shot of antibiotic and of non-steroidal (pain killer, anti-inflammatory)
The problem with things like cat scratches to the eye (aside from the injury on the surface of the eye & subsequent corneal ulceration, which can be very painful, but tend to heal well if they're properly treated) is that the claw can actually puncture the lens of the eye.
The substance within the lens develops in such a way & time that it is not recognised by the immune system as being part of the body. If the lens is punctured and any of the material starts to leak out there can be a huge reaction inside the eye (= major problem if not detected straightaway).

please don't use left over meds from another animal/person that were for another problem. Probably the cornea is scratched. If the stores are still open, get some lubricating ointment especially made for eyes. It has the same consistency as Vaseline and comes in a very small tube and cost about $8.00. Put this in the puppies eye. It will make the vision blurry but it will also offer some help for the scratched cornea. Tomorrow phone the vet to ask if you need to bring her in. Give her a kiss for me.

I would take your pup to an emergency vet tonight. My friends dog got attacked by a stray cat and got scratched in the eye and the eye couldn't be saved, they ended up having to remove it.

NO! Do not put anything in the eye. It sounds like she has a scratched cornea.... Get her to the Emergency Vet Clinic ASAP as without immediate treatment.... she can lose not only her vision but her eye as well.
Call them NOW. It is so very important

Take your dog to an emergency animal hospital tonight! Cat scratches are nasty, especially in the eye. Do NOT use old meds. That can do more harm than good. Please take my advice before your pup loses her eyesight. Good luck.

A few years ago my dog got scrached in the eye by my cat to.we took her to the vet right away.we saved her eye from falling out but we did NOT save tons of money!!!I hope your dog is allright!!!!! poor puppy!!!

I don't have to be a vet tech to tell you NOT to use leftover antibiotic ointment in your puppy's eye. The ointment you have will be for a completely different type of infection, not for a cat scratch.
The longer you wait to take your puppy for medical care could mean the difference between it having one or two eyes. If your puppy loses its eye due to an infection, don't blame the cat for it - blame yourself for not seeking medical care promptly.
Animals are just that; animals. They react due to instinct and if your puppy annoyed the cat badly enough, it's natural for the cat to strike out. We, as humans are supposed to be smarter and if we can't prevent their injuries, we should be able to help them get proper care and treatment.

Check for a 24hour emergenct vet, kitty could have detatched puppies retna -old meds could be bad. Getr puppy to a vet ASAP

Take her to the vet right away please. Do it if you love her. I am not a vet but i doknow it can be bad for her if she gets an infection.If the meds are not out dated I would start her on it till you can get her in.

your dog may need to be taken in to the vet. my dog got bit by the cat. if the eye swells shut and gets pussy definetly take her in. I don't think that it'll hurt to give the antibiotics clean the eye as well as you can and keep a close eye on her
