Tortillas!!!

Out houses had a catalog in there, and it was really too dark to read, so those pages were actually for more personal use. As hideous as it sounds, the corn cob thing really is true. And just think, that was way before the invention of Preparation H.

Aristocracy used pieces of cloth, common people used leaves. If there is one invention that has united the classes, it's toilet paper!

Sadly enough: nothing. Before toilet paper somebody probably squatted down went to the bathroom and walked away. There was no concern about being dirty in that area. Animals do this all the time.

Leaves, corn cobs, old rags, grass, scraps of paper, Sears catalogues, and in some places, their hand.

That's why in some parts of the world, it's an insult to shake hands with your left hand. That was the, uh, "takin' care of business" hand, so to speak.

Depends on the culture.

Europeans: leaves, their hands, or they just didn't wipe--they thought smelling like poo was totally acceptable, healthy even (warded of the Mire Witch).

Ancient African civilizations: small pieces of perfumed cloth.

Asians: rice or silk cloth moistened with water from the public bath

yes all the things below in other answers - paper, leaves, vines corn, fingers, rags, grass and even fish in the Normans time but only if you were well to do apparently (could only use fish one way I should think so as not to get the scales stuck in your bottom) not very nice eh!

Well! I guess you've got the answers you were looking for!

I read this one book, though, where this cowboy was forced to 'clean up' using a cactus.
Must've been really interesting!
