You can have them taken off against medical advice (AMA) and you have to sign a release that relieves your orthodontist of any responsibility for what may happen to your teeth. I really wouldn't recommend it though. You are going to with that you had just finished your treatment in five or ten years. Plus it is a huge waste of money.

There is a reason why you have them on and taking them off without something to hold them in place will make them shift again. They are also bonded to your teeth with composite and it could do a lot of damage to your enamel if not taken off by a proffessional.

i wore braces for 4 yrs, all thru high school. when i started college, i stopped wearing my retainer.
i spent three thousand dollars to straighten my teeth, and by not wearing my retainer, my teeth went back to their crooked state.
whatever your orthodontist says to do, i would follow it to the letter, otherwise you run the risk of ending up just the way you started out.

I understand why you would want to take them off. but dont. #1 they are so incredibly expensive and if you didnt pay for them you cant imagine. #2 then all this time they have been on has been waisted.
it will be worth it. just wait it out leave them on and when that day comes.... you will love your teeth and will say.... damn im glad i didnt take my braces off.

do NOT take them off yourself. they are attached to your teeth with a special glue that makes it very hard for them to come off. you will only end up hurting yourself. plus, the reason your dentist hasn't removed them yet is because your teeth are not quite right. when the time is right he/she will remove them. and trust me, it's painful enough when the dentist does it. don't try it yourself.
