Sugar Ray Robinson earned the nickname when a newspaper reporter described him as "sweet as sugar." http://www.ibhof.com/robinson.htm

Since he was one of the all-time great fighters, using the nickname has become some kind of honorary title, every other "Sugar" automatically comparing themselves to him (It's somewhat similar to when soccer players want to wear the number 7 or 10 on their backs). It's an outward proof of quality, which, of course, makes it a lot sadder if you wear the badge and fail to live up to it.

Obviously the nomenclature implies that the claimant is a "sweet" fighter. After the original, its become essentially an homage to the great Ray Robinson who many boxing experts consider to the "pound for pound" the best ever (myself included). It's also become something of an honorific--you can't roll with the nickname "Sugar" in the fight game unless you have a TON of respect from other fighter and fans. I like Mosely, but its a borderline case IMO that he's good enough in a historical contest to use the "Sugar" nickname though from a standpoint of sheer aliteration it sounds the best of the three fighters. No argument that Leonard--a guy who I can easily rank in the top ten best ever "pound for pound"--has the resume to justify the name....

maybe it shows off a bit of their sweet side which looking at them physically you just cannot identify. =)
also who know.. maybe they and their wives call each other that way as their terms of endearment.
