Mary's case was unique. She was overwhelmed by the creative power of God, with the specific purpose of creating a human life within her womb. NO, this was NOT usually done in 1st century CE Isreal. Absolutely everybody else got pregnant either by regular sexual intercourse, or as a result of a survivable rape.
Now, in the Roman and Greek (pagan) pantheon, the male "gods" were known as heinous hound-dogs, who would go around seducing any pretty girl they chose. There were many "sons of the gods" from these unions...read...lots of illegitimate children from a midnight tryst, with a guy claiming to be a god. However, these "demi -gods" were not the products of a spiritual miracle at all; there was still sexual intercourse taking place. It was just done under false pretences!
Mary knew exactly what physical act was required to make a baby. Bronze Age Gal doesn't mean gasping, slobbering idiot! SHE KNEW ABOUT SEX. That is why she asked the angel "How can this be, seeing that I am still a virgin?" The angel reassured her that it would be a miracle of God...no sex required.
Joseph's reaction is interesting. His fiancee comes to him with a story of being impregnated by God, and a visit with an angel, and she's still a virgin...and...and... Joseph was a decent guy. He just wanted out of the whole marriage contract. "Something" had happened to Mary, and this pregnancy was NOT going to be blamed on him! Keep it quiet. She has had enough. Joseph knew about sex too.
And then he changed his mind. Took Mary home as wife. Even took the blame for getting her pregnant, when that could get him lashed by her father! Why? What changed his mind?

The stories in the bible were written to explain complex ideas, provide solutions for social dilemmas and to provide a moral code of conduct. The fact that these writings have endured through the ages is astounding. The stories, however, are not factual events that actually happened. No one ever lived to be 900 years old, sin did start because someone ate an apple, and Mary didn't get pregnant without having sex. I'm not necessarily saying that you shouldn't have faith or believe in God, but you can't take the bible literally and expect it to make a lot of sense.

This is a very politically charged question. It shouldn't be, but religion and politics seem to go hand in hand. It is all a matter of faith. The scriptures say that "the Spirit of God rested upon her." Did Mary have sex with the Holy Ghost? Or do you believe that God, being omnipotent, could create life without having to perform the act? Since I believe that He created the world and all life on it, I believe that He was able to create the life within Mary without the act of sex, thus performing a miracle and bringing about the "Emmaculate Conception." Like I said, it is all about faith.

It was NOT a NORMAL conception but a miracle.
God Himself placed the seed in Mary.
I am NOT saying He had sex with her.
NO!!!!!!
The Bible said that the Spirit of God overshadowed her.
It is difficult for humans to understand that this is not in the normal sense. It MUST be accepted by FAITH.
This can not happen again. Mary did have other children who were normal kids born the normal way. Therefore she did not stay a virgin!

God chose mary to be the mother of Jesus because she was pure in thought and the way she lived. God then caused her to be pregnant through his spirit. She was never with a man at all....

Why is it so hard for so many to accept that God makes the rules... and if God wants a virgin to get pregnant by a means not know to modern science... then that virgin will get pregnant... And if God wants to dwell in that mortal body that He caused to be in the Virgin...Then God can dwell in that body... Jesus The Christ was, and is, fully God and fully man. Now in an incorruptable body in Heaven

Either sex...or the Holy Spirit.
Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

God the Holy Spirit "implanted" whatever was necessary for Jesus' conception, in her womb.
The precise science behind this has never been explained.
Considering the fact that this can actually be accomplished today, in most modern fertility clinics, it doesn't seem like much of a "stretch" for God.

Mary got pregnant through the power of God. In her time or any other the power of God can do anything weather we see it as possible or not.

think outside the box dear.
Jesus calm the sea while his boat was hit by huge waves. He also said that IF ONLY we have the faith the size of a mustard seed, we can ask the mountain to move, and it will! HE is GOD. Everything on this planet stand by HIS command! Praise God. :)
