She has no real medical conditions, per her dr. other than lung related illnesses but then again she smokes 2-3 packs a day. She has recently obtained a marijuana card to purchase grass. She refuses to go with paramedics when they are called. I worry about her 13 yr old son.

She sounds like she's bipolar or drug abusing. She needs to see her physician and be honest about what's going on. Bipolar mania causes people to act irresponsibly and sometimes go without sleep for days, then crash and be very depressed. Drug abuse sometimes mimics these symptoms. Either way, your friend has a serious problem that needs medical attention.

I have had insomnia all my life and I can certainly identify with this problem..After a few days without sleep it is just hard to act normal....I nod off, stay dizzy and prob talk a little weird. It is a tough problem to deal with. I did take restoril for nearly a year, every day when I had a health problem that made it necessary to sleep at night..I didn't take pain meds but if she needs them...she needs them..don't condemn without asking her if there is anything you can do..you may be able to help just by giving her your support...sometimes you have to deal with what life gives you...there is just no help for certain illnesses..I have never found anything to help me.without resorting to meds after a few days of not sleeping..

Most definitely. Try and not to be in the area if she is driving!

If you really feel like she is a danger, you could call the non emergency police number and have her picked up driving under the influence. You would be doing her and the general public a huge favor.

By the sounds of it, maybe she should be committed into an insane asylum!
