The swelling could be ascites, a side effect of cirrhosis. Reduce your sodium intake to 2,000mg per day or best yet to 1,500mg - check with your doctor first before you decrease your salt intake because too little sodium also causes problems.

If you have ascites, diuretics will help reduce the abdominal fluid build up. Try to get that under control to prevent having a shunt surgically implanted which I promise isn't a picnic to experience!

If you have cirrhosis, no medicine you're taking will help because your liver now has scar tissue and has hardened. If you're using Interferon for Hepatitis B or C, your gastroeterologist would be the best person to give you advice about the swelling.

If you haven't stopped drinking yet, stop now! Repeated damage to the liver, especially from alcohol is a major contributing factor in liver cancer (hepatocellular cancer).

Remember this one fact, everything that enters your body (food, drink, breathing paint or exhaust fumes, chlorine in tap water for drinking or bathing) must be processed by the liver. A swollen liver is damaged so you need to take better care of it and continuing to drink is equal to rubbing dirt into an open wound.

You don't want to be in a situation where you need a liver transplant to survive, especially if you knew how few people actually get one compared to the majority who die while waiting for one to show up.

There was an article in the paper about two months ago that stated coffee could reverse the effects of cirrhosis of the liver.

of course it's dangerous. I hope you've stopped drinking. There are plenty of websites to tell you about diet and such. One thing I know for sure is Milk Thistle is supposed to be good for liver function.

The best thing you can do is stop drinking alcohol. Also do not take Tylenol, as this can be damaging to your liver. And please go see your doctor. You need to be seen by a hepatologist (liver specialist) and a nutritionist.
