My mom had her thyroids removed because they weren't working right. The doctor failed to get her started on thyroxin and that caused her to gain more than 100 lbs in VERY little time. She is now unable to walk more than 30ft without gasping for breath. She's wanting to lose the weight on her own...as opposed to having gastric bypass surgery. With her condition, what would it take to lose the extra 200 lbs?

I also put on more then 100 lbs in 3 months. I lost the weight due to dedication to diet and exercise. It will come off, but it is slow work. Losing weight quickly won't stay off.

My ideas? Try to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. Work hard, but don't over 60 minutes at a time. Do planks and other abs exercises on alternate days.

On training days, do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.

The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!

Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.

Read magazines like Shape, Womens Fitness, Fitness, etc to get tips and to stay motivated.

Good luck and stick at it. This plan has lost me 20 lbs in 12 weeks so far, just go for it!

I don't like gastric bypass surgery it is to risky. Maybe your mom should look into the Lap Band. This is where they place a band on the top of her stomach which makes the stomach smaller. The draw back is that she will have to have it adjusted every few months. There is hope for her. She should see another doc. Make sure that she is see an endocrinologist, this is a person who specializes in glands and their hormones. It is important that she is on the appropriate amount of the thyroxin. Some adjustment to her meds may help her loss some weight. Be supportive, and maybe take some water aerobic classes with her.

If you are serious about losing weight, the calories in the food you eat should be less than the energy you use. You will have to increase your metabolic rate, and plan your diet carefully. Formulate your own weight loss plan and you will lose weight faster. More details available at http://tinyurl.com/m7ckx

Seriously, tell her to try Weight Watchers. They have good programs that are easy to stick to. She could also join curves and they can modify their program to fit within what she can handle. Also drinking lots of water helps!!

See a doctor about starting a safe exercise and diet plan. Other than that... try having her attempt to build up her endurance by walking further and further every day, keep on a moderated diet, etc.

Get Gastric bypass surgery for your mother.Gastric Bypass Surgery /gastrectomy/stomach stapling / lap band (all types of bariatric surgery) is very safe nowadays. It is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges obesity surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.

I have also read that they arrange financing for American and Canadian patients, as obesity surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor i personally believe that your obesity surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

My cousin got her surgery for gastric bypass in India through the forerunners healthcare .She is more than very happy with the results. She has lost 65lbs in 5 months. She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company. Hope this helps.
