Many "cultures" (pun!) have recognized the value of it.
Interesting note: our world (in America) is becoming "cleaner"
anti-bacterial soaps
antibiotics
etc.
Yet, our kids are getting sicker....asthma is up over 300% and obesity is up 500%....what are we doing wrong? Over protection maybe??? Our grandmothers spent 7 hours a week cleaning.....they did not vacuum...they did not clean under ther bed and we all had pets...3 dogs....4-5 cats....so why are kids sicker now?
I say kids are sicker now because we protect them too much!...."Bad tummy" is common in kids...parents now PANIC!!!....My Mom put me to bed and served jello and bouillon...not antibiotics!
When I was 9, I traveled 25 miles from home on horseback and back again....my parents thought it was good exercise....can you imagine sending your child on a 25 mile trek???? With NO CELL PHONE???? (and just a horse for protection???) This was common when I was a kid.
Penicillin was 'discovered' because someone realized that not all dirt is the same.
Anyone who thinks moldy bread is a prob is going to really hate the next 20 years....because molds are probably the best defense against "modern life".
Molds are the best thing that combat bacteria.....our true enemies!

Actually it was first discovered during the Crusades, but Priests of that era pronounced it evil, and then it wasn't used until 1928.
