The federal government offers a loan forgiveness program for teachers for Stafford Loans. You need to be teaching either in a critical need subject or in a critical need area (geographic location). They will forgive $1000 per year for five years of service.

Perkins Loans can be 100% forgiven. 1/5 of the indebtedness is forgiven each year for 5 years. There are specific circumstances, though.
