Hi,
A friend at work was told he needs to pay $250 to get his dog neutered. I think this is high. I would expect $175, or so, to be more reasonable. I will be taking my dog in to be spayed in two weeks. Anyone know what the average prices are for a spay and a neuter?
Thanks!

Both dogs are about 65-70 lbs.

I guess it depends on where you live. I have been a vet tech for 11 years and I can't imagine paying that much to spay/neuter my pet. At our clinic, a dog neuter is $72 and a dog spay (less than 50 pounds) is $85 and over 50 pounds is $105. Of course, there can be other added fees. some examples:
1--a dog that is in heat or pregnant
2--a dog that is cryptorchid (does not have both testicles descended)
3--an older dog
That particular clinic may have added in the cost of bloodwork, ecg, pain medication, etc. If you are happy and comfortable with the vet you go to I wouldn't put a price on my pet's life. But, if you are not really tied to your current vet, I would shop around, that price seems high.

Around where I live they have an once a month free spay and neuter. Also at different times around the year they might charge more or less.

Variables on cost:
male or female
Time of the year
Weight
Medications (that they give or that your dog is already on)
Location
Your dogs health

Best thing to do is make a few phone calls to local places that offer the procedure.

Hope that helps. ^.^

Average price depends on where you live. But to bits of advice. Don't do it if the dog is in heat, this will make it cost more and check out prices at the spca or a local spay and neuter clinic. They will be much less expensive.

Well, a cat costs about 80 bucks to be spayed/ neutered at an animal shelter, and the last person said that for dogs, its 30 pound intervals, so try adding about 10 dollars for every 30 pounds. Starting from 15, until you get to your dog's weight.

Yay for getting your dog fixed! Good for you and your dog!

I don't know what the average cost is but my in-laws recently paid almost $400 to neuter a shiz tsu. I know alot of the shelters offer financial assistance to help in the spay/neuter of your pet in exchange for some volunteer work at their centers. Call around and get some prices and info on financial assistance.

It depends on the weight of the dog. Heavier dogs cost more because more anesthetic has to be used.
Where you live has a lot to do with the cost, too. Frankly, I even didn't pay $250 to have my horse gelded, so it's an outrageous price to neuter a dog as far as I'm concerned.

I pd $63, 4 yrs. ago. I got her from a Humane Society. Many clinics have certain days where they give adopted dogs a special rate. Also, I got her in while she was in a lower weight category. If I'd have waited another couple of weeks, it would've cost more. Call around. I found the price at my usual vet was very high.

Contact your local animal shelter about getting help with a low cost spay and neuter program in your area!! They should know of someone that can help or you can call !!!

First... call you local chapter of the Humane Society. We give out vouchers that help defray the cost of spay and neutering. It is a mere phone call and you do NOT have to be in NEED of money to get the voucher. It is OUR way of helping promote responsible pet ownership.

I hope I helped and I applaud you and your friend for doing the right thing.

KUDOS!!!!!!!!

If this includes bloodwork I don't think it is too bad. Bloodwork itself can run $80 or so.

Just my opinion, but I would NEVER let the assembly line S/N people at a humane society operate on my animals, but to each his own.
