The McDonald's corporation is a publicly held company which means anyone can buy stock in the company. Each stockholder owns a small part of the company. There are currently about 1.25 billion shares of stock being traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol MCD at about $38 per share which means the corporation is worth more than 45 billion dollars. It is controlled by a board of directors who are elected by the stockholders. There are currently 13 members on the board. The day to day operations are over seen by a CEO (Jim Skinner) who is appointed by the Board.

McDonald's in the US are mainly operator owned, meaning a person can own a store after meeting stringent requirements, and enough $$. (Franchisee) You can own one, or several, based on store performance, and how well you run your store, cashflow, and availability of stores in your market, etc. The other minority percentage of stores (roughly 20%) are company owned stores, meaning, McDonald's USA is in charge of the stores - many start out that way, some are because franchisees have retired, or have had their agreement terminated.

The overall company is not majority owned by private investors - like Burger King. Any other ?'s go to mcdonalds.com

Just like many large restaurant chains McDonald's are owned by franchisees and the corporation. In order to own the franchise you must pay the corporation a bundle of money as well as agree to maintain the business and its image exactly the way the corporation dictates. In return, you get the benefit of their advertising and name recognition-thereby virtually assuring they'll make a bigger bundle of cash!
