First, the generations before our had also brought down many barriers - equal rights for women, the civil rights movement, etc. These were hard-fought battles waged before we were born, and that laid the groundwork for acceptance.

Second, the internet and 1000 channels on TV make things much more accessible. If you happen to be someone who likes xyz, there is sure to be an entire community of people devoted to xyz. Also, when you do text-based chat or instant messaging or message-boards, you tend to look at people as the sum of their attitudes and ideas as opposed to their race or sexual orientation.

Third, globalization has made international cultures a part of daily life for most people entering the workforce. People of different races, etc, are on equal footing with you because they are part of the same organization. Sometimes it breeds hate (e.g. maybe you hate someone's type because they got a promotion and you didn't) but in my experience that is outshined by the comeraderie.

As for the public schools, I recently was a visitor at a NYC public school, and over the year I saw certain "social studies" being taught. Surprisingly, the ones who were most affected by it were the kids who usually were troublemakers. These kids who fight with each other all day actually responded to adult influence. At the age group that I saw (7-8 grade), these (inner city) kids were being ignored by their parents and taught to be gangsters by their favorite stars, and that studying or doing well in your classes was "acting white", but when teachers engage them they are blank slates and will pick up whatever message you send. Hopefully that message is positive, it certainly isn't always that way.

People are geared to be less and less accepting as they age.

Little kids have no hatred of those different from them without being taught that hatred by adults.

Older kids are a little less tolerant based on their experiences with others different from themselves, and more importantly, based on the influences of the adults in their lives with intolerance towards others.

When the kids become adults they have had enough negative experiences with others like themselves and those different than themselves it makes it much easier to be intolerant of those differences, since they probably don't even like themselves much either.

As they grow into old men and women, the intolerance built up over time has eaten away at their thoughts to the point where there is no room for anything else. They hate others different than themselves and they strive to teach the next generation to hate as well.

So you see, it's not that the younger generation will grow to stay more tolerant, it's only the temporary appearance of better days to come that never materialize.

Schools have little to do with it, I wish it was that simple. There is no easy solution, members of certain groups with try to eliminate members of the other groups until the end of time.

The most likely way out of the seemingly neverending cycle is to give every child that grows up in an intertolerant environment hope that his future will be better than his father's and his father's before him. Is a child has hope for the future and something to look forward to he has less room for thoughts of intolerance.

The roadblock, it would seem, is how you give hope for the future to a child in a country far away that is born into a war zone and that's all he has ever known and will know.

I believe it is probably a combination of many factors -- including the I'm OK/You're OK attitude of many of their parents. Yes, schools also teach that discrimination is wrong (many of the public schools receive funding and would not get it if they taught/practiced something different!).

But perhaps we (regardless of age) have seen the effects of not accepting (respecting) others (gangs, gang violence, death).

On the other side, older people have more life experiences and most likely base their more reserved attitudes on those experiences so they may come across as unaccepting when the reality is, they were once young and possibly chanting "give peace a chance!"

It's because all of that is shoved in our faces in the media, like TV.... billboards and we are forced to live with each other and now unlike 20 years ago we have a lot more people and immigrants from all over the world here. I even think maybe we were all taught through Sesame Street... that is what the world is like today in America... all colors and sizes... people you can't tell if they are girls or boys but we all loved them... I didn't know Big Bird was a boy for a long time and I didn't care. Him and his weird pink and orange legs...

I think the schools are a difference, and I say this because when I was in school it was a bunch of different races and we all pretty much had been going to school together from about fourth grade until highschool so most people had friends of different races or sexual orientation

It's not that the schools are teaching equality and acceptance...it's that we are all finally learning rather than being ignorant. I learned to accept everyone because I grew up around the military. I don't care what color the skin is of the finger that rests on the trigger that protects my American rights and freedoms...I just care that he or she has accepted the task of doing so.

Blame school and the media.
Back in the 70's you wouldn't see white people mingling with hispanics or african americans on tv, would you? Now it's all about diversity...

I attended a private school and they uber inforced that, I don't know about public schools though...

each generation tends to become progressively more open-minded as time goes on. especially since we're more used to having a variety of races around us, in the workplace, at school, in our communities. it really wasn't that long ago that people stuck strictly to their own races. it's still the norm in some places today. as time goes on, hopefully things will just mix and blend and colors will become part of the background.
