People ultimately believe what they want to...without investigating any facts. There are definitive proofs of the integrity of the Gospel accounts. Both textual and historical. However, any moron can stick there head in the sand and say "I don't believe that". Most people that reject the NT account have absolutely no knowledge of history...

First of all Plato and other philosophers were not trying to establish a history or story but questioned and answered. There is no matter of trust involved to say the were right or wrong. They put out logical ideas to be debated on.Second you can't based something as fact based off of how many copies were produced. Take Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet one of the worlds most produce books but has been accepted for nothing but a story.

I think the reason some people believe that is because they find the Bible to be a work of theology first and foremost, which it is. However if you were to ask a Christian, depending on the denomination that person belongs to, they may call it first a work of history, then a work of theology.

When it comes to the Greek and Roman historians, they are mostly secular in their works and not theological.

We don't trust Aristotle anymore than we trust the bible. He's dead (like Jesus). We respect Aristotle because he managed to think of many reasonable things we still use today (the scientific method) or have proven false (see the answer about motion).

The bible has created a world view that encourages obedience and conformity to a powerful and overzealous organization--not worth anyone's respect.

Trusting a work as a historical document is not the same thing as believing what it say to be true.

They believe what pot-smoking college professors say about evolution, and what greedy journalists are willing to print to make a buck, too...

But the Bible has a lot to say about personal accountability, and they think if they deny the truth that they'll have an excuse ... but it is clear... no excuses.

That's why there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Even though there are remains of the letters made by the apposiles their views of what Christ said and meant vary widely.
To the best of my knowledge there are not any other sorces around to prove that any of these ideas or words are true.

We can test certain things about Plato and Aristotle.

However, many things about them we don't believe anymore because they fail our tests. Like Aristotelian motion, where a body in motion will cease to move unless force continually propels it. Newton proved that false. And you can, too, with a pool table!
