They're not quite waiting on you, but it's not quite fast food. So should you tip them when they bring your food?

I worked at Sonic as a carhop for half a year, and yes, you should tip them. The carhops have to do everything that everyone else is doing (taking orders, making drinks and ice cream, stocking up, cleaning) plus carhopping, so the tips make it worthwhile for them to carhop. Anywhere from $1 and up is considered a good tip

Yes, you should tip the carhop. My girlfriend used to work at one and while they get paid more than a server they still do not make much. I think that you should tip anyone who performs some kind of service for you.

As a rule, I always tip.
I've worked for the public in fast food before
and I can tell you--you get very little appreciation.
Even if I only stop for a large ice tea before I go to
work --I give them a dollar tip.
It's not much but I want them to know that I
appreciate them.

Yes, you should tip them.

A good rule of thumb to follow when you don't know if you should tip: When in doubt... tip. Everyone enjoys a few extra dollars as a token of appreciation for a job well done. And you can expect top service when they remember your generous nature.

I don't think it will hurt, after all they do a lot of walking to get you your food. I think that it serve them right working in the rain cold and the heat as well. So I do think it is appropriate.

Yes. They are not usually paid even minimum wage. You would not need to feel like you should pay them the same percentage you would in a sit-down restaurant, but a little something is nice.
