I'm going on my first cruise with my family and in the booklet they gave us it says to dress "fancy" in the dining room. No t-shirts, shorts, etc. I get that clothing must be appropriate but I'm wondering exactly how formal one should dress...just so we know what to pack.

There's many places to eat on the cruise ship --- casual spots, buffets, etc. and you can wear what you want. However, for the evening meal that is served in the dining room, you should come nicely dressed -- clothes that you might wear on an interview or a date would be appropriate.

Also, there's typically one night on the cruise that's specifically called FORMAL NIGHT -- you should get fairly dressed up for this. Men typically wear a tux or really nice suit. Women wear cocktail dresses or evening gowns.

Don't worry about the dining room too much -- as long as you don't wear shorts and other super casual clothes, you will be OK. Just wear what you'd wear if you were going out to dinner in a nice restaurant.

Enjoy your cruise! They're tons of fun!

denims and shoes might slip by ability of on a non-formal night on a cruise, yet they are actually not appropriate on a appropriate night. that's impolite on your host - to that end, the cruise line - to not gown in accordance to the stated gown. Formal gown includes a minimum of a jacket and tie, and your outfit isn't even close. The cruise line would possibly not say something to you, yet do you unquestionably need the embarrassment in the event that they do? you'll have extra appropriate outfits with you. i'm particular this cruise isn't a final-minute ask your self. won't be in a position to you call homestead and ask them to deliver some outfits to you?

I've seen all ranges. Some younger girls (late teens/early twenties) I saw wore formal-formals (prom dresses, etc.) There is usually a designated night for extra-special dress-up, where that kind of dress would be appropriate. Usually, all other nights, a skirt/top or dress would be sufficient. (FYI, I never wore a formal, just a cocktail dress.)

On ours, the men all wore suits, the women wore everything from a nice dress that you would wear to a wedding, all the way to sequins and diamonds all over the place. You have a big choice. Wear something that makes you look pretty and feminine, without looking trashy.

I've been on a cruise and believe me, the majority of passengers were definitely NOT what you would call high class. A decent dress for women and suit and tie for men is quite sufficient.

Well, anymore, it's not like you're going to a prom or getting married. More like going to a wedding. Whatever you would wear at home for an evening out should suffice. You will not be denied dinner.
