It is the very high temperatures and dry climates that make the deserts.
If it were not hot and dry, it wouldn't be a desert - it would be a lush, green pasture, or a rain forest, or whatever the local climate conditions permitted.

desert is actually a term refering to the amount of precipitation that an area gets. Most deserts are in equatorial regions so that's why they are hot.
