I used a variety of techniques. For reading and outlining I preferred to study in a library. Sometimes I chose a library where I could see others, for some occassional excitement, other times I chose a remote library with cubicles. It depended a bit on my mood, and the level of concentration needed for the material being studied.
Secondly, I am a restless person and don't like to sit for long periods of time. I would take long walks with my notes from lecture and also I would outline (in my handwriting) the text. I found that getting fresh air, as well as exercise helped remove some of the monotony of a room environment.
For myself, I found that outlining the textbook on a separate piece of paper helped with memorizing the material a great deal. My roommate, however, could simply show up at lecture, do the homework and get an A on a test--he was a genius though. I had to work hard to digest the material and am easily distracted.
A lot depends on your ability to focus. If you are like my rommate you are a lucky person. He got to party while I studied.

It depends on the type of person you are. I'm the type that gets easily distracted so I can't have the tv or music on or I won't get anything accomplished. I need a quiet well lit room or a quiet library. I also need an uncomfortable chair rather than a comfy couch or I'd just fall asleep. You need to determine what works best for you!

First you need light, light makes everything clearer. You also need space. Only what you absolutely need should be around you, anything else may make the area clustered and confusing. You should sit in a chair in front of a desk or table. This will make the enviroment seem more school-like, therefore making it easier to concentrate. And most importantly make sure you have ABSOLUTE SILENCE.

I always found sitting in a chair with my feet over the arms with the TV on was the best way to study. Any yes I had a 4.0 average.

me sitting down in a chair w/ complete silence so i can concentrate on what i am doing...i cant listen to any music b/c then i start singing the songs on my ipod....lol....and if i have to read something...it HAS to be quiet...if there is even a bird chirping outside (which has happened) i cant concentrate...i start listening to the damn bird and wish that it would shut the hell up! the lighting, maybe like library lights...books, just the ones that i am using, no more, too much clutter...i dont really need that much space (for that reason, i dont have clutter)!

I study at my desk, with only the books and supplies I need for that particular assignment (if I'm doing math, I won't have a history book). Also, I need bright, natural light (not halogen) and I can't have a TV at all. I can listen to music as long as I'm not doing heavy reading.

you need light to see and books to study. you need space because crampy rooms make you feel closed in and stuffy.
you should study sitting on a chair that is comfortable enough to make you relax and be able to concentrate.
keep the window open for fresh air.

A disco ball spinning, really loud music (rap if you have any), and all kinds of background noise. This seems to work every time!
