They aren't retarded and should be able to live alone, although they will have NO FRIENDS, and they might wind up in prison due to their inappropriate behavior. People suffering from Asperger's syndrome have no conscience, they cannot empathize with others or show compassion. This makes them appear cold, calous, and downright evil to the outside world.

My daughter is high functioning Asperger's. She was diagnosed three years ago and has had a lot of help. She has a 504 plan at school that gets her help she needs in the classroom. She was counseled by the school counselor and an outside counselor. There was a time when I wondered if any of it was doing any good, but this past year she suddenly started blossoming. She has lots of friends and is enjoying those friendships. She's getting interested in boys and they are interested in her also. She talks a lot about going to college and what she wants to do when she grows up. She's 12 years old right now. I really believe she's going to do well. Someone with AS needs a lot of help with the social skills. That's what my daughter has had. They have to be taught skills that other people just pick up on their own. It sounds like a daunting task, but it can be done. I recommend a book that I have entitled Asperger's Syndrome and Your Child: A Parents Guide by Michael D. Powers and Janet Poland. It's helped me to help her. I love that book!

I think it depends on the severity of Asperger's they have. I feel that most likely someone with Asperger's will be able to take care of most of there own needs. The only problem is they may not be able to hold down a job to support themselves so they would most likely require some financial assistance. They may also need to rely on someone to take them places like grocery shopping. Some people with Asperger has a hard time understanding money and my be taken advantage of by dishonest cashiers wanting to pocket some extra cash. People with Asperger tend to need a very rigid daily plan to follow that does not change or they become frustrated and very hard to deal with. They need to have things done a certain way to make them comfortable and secure. I do believe that they can be in relationships but they would need a very understanding partner that understands the in's and outs of Asperger's. People with Asperger's do not have a blank look on there faces in fact it can be very difficult to tell if someone even has the syndrome. Perhaps you talk to fast and they are trying to understand what you are saying. Also it's not polite to use mentally retarded to any one with they may or may not be mentally challenged. Please learn to be more kinder in the way you word things.

Depends on how severe the aspergers is. I know an 11 year old with aspergers, he is on a medication that helps him out socially and is seeing a psych for 2 years. His future looks great. Asperger's is not the worst thing in the world to have. Also I met a lady the other day that had it. she was one of the nicest people I have ever met. None of the asp's I have met have a blank stare.

Ok, this is the second question on the subject of Asperger Syndrome I've had to deal with tonight. I myself have the disoder, and for me, the hardest thing is getting some kind of work going. I was diagnosed with the disorder fairly recently AFTER I was laid off my last job. As much as I would like to work, finding gainful is harder than actually keeping it. Just as long as I don't work as a janitor, I guess I'll be alright. I'm unsure, but only time will tell. As for the "blank look"? Well, I'm naturally ugly anyway! ;)

They are capable as anyone else in this world. They just got quirks about them that make the different. They like routines( not alot of change) Social skills can be learned by taken classes( they are offered in some places) People with Asperger are NOT stupid retarded etc, they are the most loving caring people you will ever meet. Most have a IQ above average! they can hold down a job but it will be a job that repeative factory jobs you get my point So they are not total idiots

If he can manage his daily needs independently such as bathing, grooming, cooking , cleaning, financial resposibilities, and have good health and safety skill in all areas of life, he should be able to manage to be on his own, you do not have to be social to live independently, such as a hermit does not interact with people, yet if he is capable of taking care of him self, he could run into problem when he may have to go to the store to purchase groceries or when he confronted in another type of community social environment. he may need assisting when he is out in the community, you may want to request from your local community mental health agency about Community Living Supports. I hope this was help full

as far as i know not really. asperger is like autism, but it doesn't show until the child is old enough and actually stops in mental development. you can teach them to take care of themselves. but as far as any "normal" woman/man would marry them, i doubt it.
hey taylor! where in the world did you get your info from? you're not talking about asperger.
