I would recommend getting a treatment directly from your veterinarian. It will cost a little more, but the vet will show you how to safely clean your cats ears and apply the treatment. This is definately a situation to pay a little more and have it done right the first time, so you don't have more problems later.

RE:
Is Hartz ear mites treatment for cats safe?

It's safe, but ineffective. Hartz products are nothing to brag about. They're cheap and usually won't work. Definately NOT on ear mites.

It may or may not be safe and for sure it doesn't get rid of the ear mites. By the time you spend all that money and treat the cat yourself you will have spent as much as getting a shot from the vet which will eliminate the ear mites once and for all (unless the cat gets reinfected).

The medications you can buy in a pet store, Walmart or wherever are those that veterinarians have found harmful or ineffective. The best treatments can only be obtained by prescription from a vet.

Use only ear mite remedies that are specifically made for cats. They can have strange toxic reactions to anything stronger.

You might try rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad or ball NOT Q- TIPS.
But using alcohol (twice a day for a week or until symptoms subside) will kill earmites and you can gently swab their ear (what you can reach) and clean away all of the ear mite gunk.

Yes it is safe for cats, however it isnt very effective at treating ear mites. I highly suggest you take your cat to the vet for an exam, what might seem like ear mites could be somethign else like an ear infection.

I would not trust anything Hartz puts out on the market. Their pesticides are generally unsafe for animals, but the labels and warnings they use cover so broad an area that they can literally get away with pet murder and not answer to anyone about it.
