Well, the day before yesterday I saw a pigeon that had poop on it and it seemed very dirty. There was mucus all over its eyes and beak. Its beak cant close and its head cant reach down to eat or drink. Yesterday my teachers said that it got better. It looked very sick. They called the animal control/humane society and they never came to pick up the pigeon. Today, I caught the pigeon with a box so it can be taken care of. What do you think is wrong with the pigeon?

PS: Do u think it couldve been rabies? But I dont think that it is rabies because its wings flapped on my hand 3 times and i washed it about 10 times each time, and i never got sick. Well again, it may be cause i washed my hands.

It sounds very much as if this poor pigeon has either a respiratory disease/infection,or something caught in its throat. No, its not rabies. Can you take the pigeon to a vet? Maybe a charitable organisation dealing with sick animals? You have come this far,it would be great for you to see it through. Make sure you scrub your hands thoroughly after handling the bird.Whilst realising most people look upon Pigeons as vermin, they are still wild birds that should not be suffering if it can be helped.

I think it's kind hearted of you to take it under "your wing" so to speak....If the pigeon is still sick acting you may want to give it food and water and a place to stay.....and some prayer and then release it ....knowing that you did everything you could....You could take it to a vet....but that could be costly to you...Mother nature has a way of healing and taking care of it's own....and even little creatures...have guardians that look after them....,but if the pigeon continues to be sick....please don't put your self at risk of infection....wear gloves when handling it....and wash your hands very well....at all times....But all in all..it may be better to realease it back into mother nature....Like us, animals get sick...and they too....have a time to live..and a time to die....
Hugs..:)

birds do not get rabies...only mammals do, and it is transmitted usually through a bite, not just from having an animal touch you. Do you have a bird rehab nearby, they may take it in, or just release it back into the wild.

Birds don't get rabies.

clean him up and give him wild bird seed that has a lot of Milo in it. Milo is the reddish orange round seed. they love them. You can get it a Wal-Mart for about a dollar a bag.

Give a dish of water he can get his break in. They have to submerge their beak to drink. Do not put water in his mouth.

I've got a lot of links to wildlife carers from a lot of countries on my site, at
http://au.geocities.com/leaswebsite/links under "Wildlife Assistance" - just click on them all, click on your country and state, have a browse, 'phone them and ask their advice.

These sites also explain all about what to do for orphan and injured birds -
